Is There A Way to Keep Rav4 Running and Locked at the Same Time

Is there a way to leave the car running and lock the doors at the same time?

My dog is in the car with me a lot in the summer, but sometimes I have to stop to go to the store, etc., but I can’t leave him in the car without air conditioning. I know if I turn the car off, leave it and then do a remote start it will work, but only for a few minutes and I don’t want to risk it turning off.

It’s a safety feature, so no.

The security feature is to prevent someone from taking my car after a break-in?

So you don’t lock your kids in the car.

Okay. Great, I wouldn’t accidentally lock my keys in the car, but I wish there was a way to do that.

I think you can use the remote start for 10 minutes. Otherwise, teach your dog to use the lock button.

Remote Start

YES. Use remote start as long as the A/C is on/running and may have started.

You can use the door keys instead of the remote, but there are risks.

What are the risks? It could be stolen or my dog could shift gears or something? Really?

Ah, it’s easy to get stolen, especially if the dog accidentally unlocks the car.

That makes sense. He’s strapped in and there’s a cover that prevents him from unbuckling, otherwise he’d climb into the driver’s seat while I’m driving down the highway 🙃.

The Victorian Parliament could have someone just open your door and drive away. With one-touch start, you can drive away as soon as the engine starts. Even if the key is out of the starting range, the engine will keep running and you can continue driving. This feature allows you to drive the car even if the Phob battery is dead.

It should last for 15 minutes.

I don’t think my car can do that. I swear it died in less than 10 minutes.

Mine was 10 minutes. It drove me crazy.

It’s an hour.

Mine is 25 minutes. If you just leave it running and don’t remote start it, it’s an hour.

Yeah, aren’t we talking about remote start?

The manual says 10, I think my app shows a countdown.

Keyless one-touch start the car and leave the vehicle with the key fob. Remove the steel key from the fob and lock the driver in.

Yes, you can lock and unlock the car with a physical key.

What year is your Toyota? My husband installed the Viper Security System on his 2007 Tacoma, which has a remote start feature. It runs for 10 minutes and then shuts the engine off.

2022 xle hybrid. As far as I know, I can only start it with the remote control. I thought it was supposed to run for 10 minutes, but it doesn’t seem to run that long.

Did you add a remote start feature? I know some cars have the ability to hold down the lock button, but mine doesn’t. Manual locking may be the only option.

I added it, it was added when I ordered it and the dealer installed it when it arrived. I don’t really understand the terminology, but I assume it’s still an aftermarket product? It works with the remote, but I don’t think I have the ability to use the app.

One feature I really hate is that the doors automatically lock if you don’t load the items you need fast enough (bad knees). It often takes me 3 trips home to get my stuff, so if I’m slow, the doors usually auto-lock on the 3rd trip, even if the car isn’t running. Does anyone know how to disable this feature?

Wait a minute. Can you explain what you are doing when you lock the doors? My car never locks itself. I also have a ’17 Limited Edition Hybrid.

My car does the same thing! I thought it was in case I accidentally left it unlocked. I’ve learned to carry my keys with me now because too many times I’ve left the house with something and the car was already locked.

Just leave it on, take your key fob, and lock it with your key.

Thanks, I’ll try that. I’ve never seen a key on a fob or tried to open it 😬.

I don’t have a place to put the key in my car. When I put the fob on, it beeps but doesn’t lock.

What year is your RAV4?

According to the owner’s manual, it should be. Can the physical key be used by sliding it out of the fob and onto the door?

Yes and no. You can’t see the keyhole from inside or outside the car.

Interesting. There may be a cover on the outside door handle that snaps off? This is from the 2021 owner’s manual.

You can lock the doors with a different door key. I do this occasionally on other cars. A good anti-theft company can also install a disable switch to prevent vehicle theft.

I still use the key to my car, so I leave the car on all the time and then lock it manually with the other key.

Yes, I use a physical key to lock the car for my pup while I walk around the store for a few minutes.

I think if you leave the car running all the time and then take the key fob with you. You can lock the car with the key fob and then walk away and the car will stay locked and running. I could be wrong, I think my 2018 model does this.

You can’t do that with the new RAV4.

It kind of sucks. It’s like if I want to keep my car running all the time to keep it hot in the winter or cold in the summer, I’m putting myself at risk of having something stolen from the car.

Agreed. But I’ve read that if you pull out the physical key, you can trick it into locking? I haven’t tested that yet.

My 17 unlocks immediately if you leave the engine running and it beeps really loud.

Mine does the same thing. In fact, I thought it was still locked at first until I got back and realized it was unlocked. I was only gone two minutes, but that was enough.

Two sets of keys with alarms.

Remote start works for up to 10 minutes. If you have a quick trip, you can restart every 10 minutes.

I don’t think my remote start is up to 10 minutes, but I’d like to see if I can get the app to work with it, because then I can control it from my phone. I’m just concerned that sometimes I’ll be in the store, but if the line is long, I know the temperature will go up even if the car is off for a few minutes.

I use the app. You can check the countdown timer in the app.

I use the valet key to lock the car and take the key fob with me.

What is the valet key?

It is a small key in the fob that can be used to lock the doors.

What does a pet dog do when it is in the car? I use this and it works. It doesn’t cool the whole car. It is enough to keep the crate cool on the hottest days when the hose is attached to the crate. It also makes a big difference in the interior temperature of the car when you use ceramic tint.

Thanks, I’ve never seen that before, but I’ll check it out. It’s just strapped in the back seat.

If it moves to another part of the car when you’re not there, it won’t be cool enough. If it stays in the hatch area and the car has ceramic insulation, it might be better. It’s the only device I’ve seen that controls the heat generated by cooling without blowing it into the environment.

I have a one-touch start device.

What I do is take my key fob, while the car is moving, close all the doors, open the front window and close the door.

Conclusion

Then I put my hand in and roll up the window and the car stays started, all the doors lock and you have to unlock them with a physical key to open them again.

How do I roll up the window after putting my hand in?

YES. I tried putting my hand in and it didn’t work. I’m going to try a manual key.

I am looking for a remote starter. I drove my car for 30 minutes before it died.

I think that’s what I was using. My car did not come with this device, but I had the dealer install it on my car.

I did not have Toyota install it. They wanted too much money for the remote start unit I installed on my wife’s 2015 rav4 and my 2021 rav4. It only cost $870.

If you have remote start (if I understand your post) you should be able to do a starter takeover. If you leave the key in the ignition with the engine running and press the sequence that triggers the remote start, it should flash at you to indicate that it is being remote controlled.

As long as your foot is not on the brake and the car is parked in a space, turning the ignition off and removing the key will keep the car running. This way, you can use the remote start time to go shopping at the store.

I don’t think I have anywhere else to put the key except push start.

Okay. Then I guess you should start it with the push button first, then press the start button on the remote and walk away from the vehicle. Don’t press the brake pedal after you start the car or it will get in the way of the remote. You should be able to lock and unlock the car with the remote.

The aftermarket remote starts, but usually shuts off after 20 minutes. Or get another key

I just leave my puppy at home or let her out of the car, it’s not worth the risk. My puppy says, “Mommy, be safe!

I have two sets of keys and leave one in the car when I drive.
