How to Get Maps on Rav4 Radio Screen
Ok so I’m new here and just bought this 2018 Toyota Rav 4. I previously owned a 2020 Nissan Sentra and all I did was plug my phone into apple pay and my maps would show up. This car has no apple play and apparently no maps. I was told there was an app for this but I can only get roadside assistance to show up on the app. My radio is connected to bluetooth but there is no navigation option. Edit: I know it doesn’t have Apple Play, I was just wondering if there was a way to download maps to my radio screen.
The CarPlay app for the RAV4 won’t be available until 2019.
I know it doesn’t have CarPlay, I was just wondering if there was a way to display maps on my radio screen.
Replacing the head unit
The RAV4 LE does not come with navigation (pretty sure). The easiest way to get maps is to replace the main unit. Did your salesperson not tell you this or did you not mention that you needed the map feature?
I didn’t know that cars didn’t have that option. I haven’t had this problem with every car I’ve owned. I’m not a car salesman, I don’t know what to ask, I didn’t know cars didn’t come with this feature.
Most models have a separate navigation package or are included in the top trim level. Hopefully you can either trade in or replace the car’s navigation. The latter may be easier, I would suggest you check out crutchfield.
Can I ask how easy it is to replace the on-board computer?
Depends on how comfortable you are with the installation. If you’re worried about breaking the plastic when you remove it, I’d suggest checking with a Crutchfield consultant to see if they have a recommendation for someone to help you with the installation in your area. They usually come with a manual with fairly detailed installation steps.
I visited the Crutchfield website and noticed that they have an online chat feature for consultants. Much appreciated.
I noticed on crutchfield.com (and probably all navigation/audio brands) that not all navigation/audio units have CD players, and not all units connect to the steering wheel controls. Just a heads up. I’d like to at least keep my steering wheel audio controls, and I’ll ask my consultant what the best model is.

The LE is a base model, so options are limited.
The base model does not come with an upgraded head unit that supports Car Play or the Toyota Entune Suite (which includes a navigation app). You will need to upgrade the head unit. I would suggest you go to Best Buy or your local audio store as dealers are notoriously expensive.
My car is an 18 model and I replaced the head unit with a Sony Apple car plar/android auto. Best Buy can install it for free if you are interested.

I use the Scout app on my phone and it shows up on the screen in my car. My Rav is a 2018 model and does not come with navigation.
The top one. You need to connect via bluetooth and open the app on your phone for it to show up on the screen.
You’re welcome. I also check gas prices. It tells you the price, location and directions to the gas station.
My 2017 Limited comes with an upgraded sound system that includes Bluetooth connectivity to my phone, Alexa integration and maps.
I use the Scout app to connect and view maps on the console.
A Toyota Entune-enabled console is required to use this feature. Base models do not have Entune
If your vehicle doesn’t support on-screen navigation, another option is to launch the app on your phone and use Bluetooth to connect to the car’s speakers. Get a phone holder that attaches to your windshield …… Here’s what I did …… Hope this helps.
Honestly, I’m not being snarky, I just want a Garmin with lifetime maps.
Garmin Drive 52, GPS navigator with 5″ display, simple on-screen menus, and easy to view maps!
Upgrading my 2015 LE’s in-car host
I wanted to upgrade my 2015 LE’s in-car console because I wanted to use CarPlay.
The price of the main unit is $350, and with additional modules and labor, the job will cost almost $1,000. I don’t think it’s worth it.
Oh wow, yeah, I agree with you. I used to have a Nissan Altima and my dad replaced the radio for me, so I was wondering if he or my friend could do it for me.
It would save me some money. But from talking to the shop, I know that you need additional modules to maintain the steering wheel controls, vehicle settings, and backup camera.
I don’t know what all the “!!!!!” is about. But I am considering it. I want to make sure I’m not missing any info on how to do it, because I’ve never had to do this before and I’ve been told it makes the car less valuable, but I don’t think that would be the case if I had a better radio installed.
Is replacing the stereo usually plug and play?
No, you’re using the most basic radio. I have one of those.
Sorry, but I highly recommend this magnetic phone holder (replaces the fog lights with LEDs): worth every penny!

If your car doesn’t support on-screen navigation, another option is to launch an app on your phone and use Bluetooth from your car speakers. I use Google Maps or Waze and both work well.

Didn’t you test drive it before you bought it? I always make sure the model I’m buying has carplay if I want it, and I test drive it in person if I can. If not, I at least check online to see which configurations offer which features.
I test drove it but didn’t realize it didn’t have maps. My old radio didn’t have a map option, I just plugged in my phone and it came up on the screen.
